LAHORE, Jan 7: The chestnut colt, Headingley, romped home to edge out Chanela to win in an exciting finish in the Wak Gas New Year Cup run over a sprinting distance of 1000m at the Racecourse on Sunday. Owned by the Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman Tariq Aziz, Headingley took control of the first classic of the new year entering the straight, and outclassed his nine rivals to beat Chanela by half a length. Lucifer finished third by a neck's margin. Shahid Rehman rode the winner trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar.
The bay English mare, Grecianette, owned by Syed Parvaiz Hussain Shah registered her maiden success when winning the Thatta Cement Cup contested over 1200m.
Trained by Sohail Aziz and partnered by jockey M. Zeeshan, Grecianette looked to be going like a winner throughout and quickened her pace from the half way to win by seven lengths from Dexterrity. Sher-e-Gujrat finished third.
Ever improving colt, Jasrah, under jockey Shahid Rehman registered a convincing win to complete a hat-trick of victories and lift the Ghazanvi Cup gone over 1200m. Shahid Rehman later drove Tipu Sultan to win the eighth and last race and complete a well-deserved treble to distinguish himself among the riders.
Jockey M. Zeeshan brought in a brace of winners through Grecianette and Top Cat. Five favourites obliged the punters in a card of eight races.
