PO killed in ‘encounter’

SIALKOT, Jan 6: A notorious proclaimed offender was killed on Saturday in an encounter with police near Baba Hameed Shah shrine in Kotli Ameer Shah village, Sialkot tehsil.

Reports said that PO Shafiq alias Shafiqa was present in the shrine along with his accomplices Umer and Aadil when a police team of Uggoki and Sialkot Saddar on a tip-off raided there.

Getting the wind of police arrival, the accused took shelter in nearby fields and opened fire on police.

PO Shafiq died on the spot when police returned the fire. Later, police arrested accused Umer while the third accused managed to escape from the scene.

Police, in more than 27 cases of murder, dacoity, robbery and other heinous crimes wanted the dead PO. Police have registered a case and are investigating.

REGISTRATION: The process of issuing computerized registration and number plates of new vehicles has begun in Sialkot district.

Punjab Industries Minister Muhammad Ajmal Cheema and Punjab Excise & Taxation secretary Javaid Aslam mutually inaugurated the process during a special ceremony held here on Saturday. Sialkot District Nazim Muhammad Akmal Cheema, DCO Maj Rizwanullah Baig (retired) and district excise and taxation officer Tanvir Abbas Gondal were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the district nazim said that the computerized registration of old vehicles would also be started soon in the district.

He said the process of computerized registration of new vehicles would be completed in a stipulated period of seven days.

Later, the provincial minister, the district nazim and the provincial E&T secretary distributed computerized registration papers and number plates among the applicants.
