‘Govt flouts SC orders’

Published January 6, 2007

LAHORE, Jan 5: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) acting secretary-general Liaquat Baloch and Punjab Assembly members Asghar Ali Gujjar, Dr Syed Waseem Akhtar, Syed Ehsanullah Waqas, Chaudhry Shaukat and Arshad Baggu have opposed the provincial government’s decision to allow celebration of Basant and called it contempt of court.

MMA leaders said the Supreme Court had taken suo moto notice of scores of deaths by twine last year and banned kite flying. The provincial government committed contempt of court by deciding to allow Basant on Feb 24 and 25 as the apex court had not reviewed its restraint order, they said.

The MMA leaders demanded a permanent ban be imposed on kite flying as it posed a threat to the lives of citizens.
