PESHAWAR, Jan 4: The Acting Governor of the NWFP, Justice Tariq Pervez, has underscored the need to help those inmates who are compelled to languish in jails for a long time due to their inability to pay fines.
He said this during a visit to the provincial law department on Thursday. Expressing his pleasure on the strengthening of the department, the acting governor said it was now in a position to fulfil its responsibilities.
The department, he said, should arrange workshops and conferences in order to train its staff. Senior officials of the department should interact with their respective institutions to ensure a better performance.
Pointing towards the officers hailing from the judiciary, the acting governor advised them that their actions and deeds should act as model for all government officials.
Earlier, Shaukat Naseem Khan Chamkani, the law secretary, apprised the acting governor of the administrative structure of the department. He said that certain new wings had been created in the department.
The human rights cell, which was created in 1995, remained dormant until last year. In this connection a memorandum of understanding was signed with the Unicef, he said.—Agencies
