LAHORE, Jan 3: Former Test cricketer Aaqib Javed has been appointed as chief coach at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official announced on Wednesday.

Aaqib, who has passed the Level-II coaching course will supersede NCA's bowling coach Mohtasham Rasheed, who has passed the Level-III course.

Sources said the PCB also ignored the national policy in hiring the services of Aaqib as the board did not give any advertisement in the national press for the post.

Aaqib, who played 22 Tests capturing 54 wickets and 163 ODIs, bagging 182 wickets, was a member of Pakistan’s victorious World Cup squad in 1992.

Once Aaqib held a world record for the best bowling figures in ODIs, taking 7-37, including a hat-trick, against India at Sharjah in 1991-92.

Besides having passed the Level-II course, Aaqib has attended the ACC High Performance Course-2004 and the Cricket Australia/ACC Cricket Skills course for fast bowling and batting, held at Bangkok in 2004-5.

As a fast bowling coach, Aaqib has functioned as a bowling coach at the Lahore Regional Academy in Sheikhupura in 2001 and was also the head coach of the Lahore Region in Muridke (2002) besides being the fast bowling coach at the NCA (2004-5).

Aaqib has worked with Mohammad Asif. Other fast bowlers who have trained under Aaqib include Mohammad Khalil, Mohammad Irshad and Samiullah Niazi.
