150 pickups to collect offals

Published December 28, 2006

LAHORE, Dec 27: The solid waste management department will hire 150 pickups to collect offals of sacrificial animals during Eid days. SWM officials say small vehicles are needed to collect waste from narrow city lanes where SWM trucks cannot be moved in.

Funds for hiring the pick-ups have been released to all the nine towns, they add.

One emergency centre manned by assistant district officer (sanitation) and field staff in each town has also been set up for improving hygienic conditions during Eid days.

The sanitation committee of the City District Government Lahore will conduct raids to monitor efficiency of emergency centre staff.

Containers placed on various city roads for dumping of solid waste will be cleaned thrice daily during lifting operation.

Officials say about 2,000 pushcarts will be distributed among SWM field staff before Eid to further improve collection of solid waste.
