KUWAIT CITY, Dec 17: Kuwait has lifted a ban imposed on the import of fish and its products from Iran, India and Pakistan. Commerce and Industry Minister Falah Al Hajiri has rendered this resolution following the recommendation of the committee on food safety, says a press release issued by the ministry.

It said further that as a precautionary measure the committee, however, recommended a periodical inspection of marine products imported from these three countries.

The purpose of undertaking the inspection was to stand on the validity of such products for human consumption, the ministry said, pointing out that the resolution was necessary to ensure the adherence of fish importers with heath controls, rules and technical requirement.

The ban was imposed after the safety committee found that fish imported from Iran, India and Pakistan carries bacteria that cause cancer.

FLIGHTS INCREASE: Pakistan and Kuwait’s civil aviation officials recently held talks for a possible increase in flights between the two countries.

Sources told Dawn that a Pakistani delegation, headed by additional secretary, ministry of defence, Maj-Gen Mir Haider Ali Khan, had arrived in Kuwait City a few days back and discussed with Kuwaiti officials the possibility of increasing flights between the two countries.

They said during a discussion with Kuwait Civil Aviation’s director general Fauuaz Al Farah, the Kuwaiti side requested Pakistan to allow its private airline Al Jazzera to start its operation to Pakistan. The Pakistani side urged Kuwait to allow PIA to start its flights to Dubai from Kuwait. Currently, PIA is directly operating to Lahore, Peshawar and Karachi from Kuwait.

The sources said that the two sides did not make any progress on their requests but promised to meet again and find ways to resolve the issues.
