KARACHI, Dec 13: Shahzadi Nagor, a victim of gang-rape in Naushahro Feroz, on Wednesday appealed the chief justice of the Supreme Court to take suo motu action and order the authorities to arrest the rapists.

Addressing a press conference along with Resident Director of the Aurat Foundation Anees Haroon at the Karachi Press Club, she said that about 44 days back some 20 armed persons made her and her family members hostage at gunpoint while they were working in the fields. She said five of them raped her in the presence of her family members including her husband.

Shahzadi said that the criminals also misbehave with her eight-year-old daughter. She said that after the incident her family members approached the nearest police station to lodge an FIR. She said that on interference of some influential of the area police did not mention names of the three main suspects in the FIR.

She said that before the incident the suspects had blamed that her brother had teased a girl of their family, but the issue was settled by elders of both families.

She said these suspects were also involved in various other crimes while feudal and influential of area were patronising them. She said that these men were also threatening her and her family and forcing them to withdraw the case.

Anees Haroon said that on the one hand the government was claiming having taken steps for women's protection and, on the other, a large number of women were subjected to rape and other crimes in the country. She said women needed real protection not just written laws.

She said the government should not only constitute women protection laws but also effectively implement them.

Shahzadi Nagor appealed to the chief justice of the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the incident and provide her with justice. She also appealed to the authorities to try the case in and anti-terrorism court.—PPI
