LAHORE, Dec 8: A local court on Friday sentenced a physician to 10-year rigorous imprisonment for raping a teenager in his clinic. The conviction is described by lawyers as first under the newly-enacted Protection of Women (Criminal Laws Amendment) Act, 2006.

Additional district and sessions judge Sarwar Saleemullah sentenced Dr Nazir Ahmad who had assaulted the girl in his clinic on Walton Road.

Advocate Raja Abdur Rehman, the counsel for Waris Ali, an uncle of the victim and the complainant, submitted that all evidence, including the medical report, substantiated the fact that the girl was sexually assaulted by the physician when she had visited him with Mr Waris and his wife for treatment on Aug 31, 2005. Mr Rehman told the sessions court that the sentence passed was on the lower side and that the complainant wanted to move the Federal Shariat Court .
