VEHARI, Dec 8: Around 2,000 students of the Government Girls High School, F-Block, have protested against the bad behaviour of their headmistress and non-availability of drinking water due to disconnection of power supply.

According to details collected by this correspondent, students boycotted their classes and staged for one-and-a-half-hour a sit-in in front of headmistress Nasreen Abdul Haq’s office.

Protesting girl students also locked the headmistress in her office and demanded her transfer and restoration of the power supply immediately.

The protesters later dispersed peacefully when DEO (Secondary) Muhammad Aslam Bhatti assured them that their demands would be met.

Senior schoolteacher Nighat Batool said the Mepco officials had severed the power supply to the school owing to the non-payment of dues some three days back. Since then, she said the school was devoid of potable water.

She claimed that the headmistress misbehaved with staff and students when they tried to provide first aid to a 9th class student, Nighat, who had fainted on Thursday. However, a school peon called a nearby doctor who provided her the first aid. Later, the student was shifted to a hospital.

According to the doctor, the student was a heart patient and any delay in the first aid could have serious consequences for her.

A group of students alleged that the headmistress had also behaved badly with the doctor.

When contacted, DEO (secondary) Muhammad Aslam Bhatti admitted that the headmistress had not paid the electricity bill despite the availability of required funds.

He said that he had dispatched a letter to the high-ups for the immediate transfer of the headmistress, who had taken the charge only four months ago.

During this short period, he said the affairs of school had not been smooth.

However, the DEO claimed that the power supply to the school would be got restored on Saturday (today).

Headmistress Nasreen Abdul Haq was not available for comments.
