BAHAWALPUR, Dec 7: The students of Quaid-e-Azam Medical College have protested against the principal for not clearing 16 candidates for appearing in the MBBS,

Final Professional, Annual Examination,2006, scheduled to commence on Dec 11.

A students’ spokesman told Dawn here on Thursday that earlier the eligibility reports of 20 candidates were withheld by the principal. Later, four of them were cleared to appear in the examination, but the remaining 16 were still waiting for the clearance.

He said this could affect the academic career of these students by pushing them a whole academic year back.

He claimed these students had fulfilled all other requirements for clearance, including the attendance and other formalities. He stated the principal referred the cases to college academic council, which could not meet on Thursday.

The students appealed to the Punjab chief minister to intervene in the matter to save their academic year.

The CM is expected to preside over the QAMC convocation on Friday (today).

OUTAGES: Mepco began unscheduled power loadshedding in the city.

The abrupt loadshedding continued in almost all parts of the city with intervals, causing inconvenience for the citizens.

A staffer at Mepco complaint office said that the outages were caused by some fault in Jamshoro supply system.

CANE GROWERS: The representatives of the cane growers of the area alleged at a press conference that sugar millers were badly exploiting the farmers, causing them huge financial losses.

They said the trolleys laden with sugarcane were kept waiting outside the mills and weighed after twenty-four hours delay to cause reduction in the cane’s weight, which consequently brings down the amount paid to the growers.

They reiterated their demand that the growers be allowed to sell their yield in the open market instead of specific mills in the area.

They lamented that the government officials seemed unconcerned with the growers’ plight.

They also voiced their concern over the shortage and high prices of fertilizers and demanded subsidy on seed, diesel and pesticides for better yield.

ARTS COUNCILS: Punjab minister for culture and youth affairs Ahaukat Ali Bhatti said that under a comprehensive programme all the arts councils in the province would be upgraded and provided the missing facilities.
