ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: Federal Minister for Information Mohammad Ali Durrani said on Tuesday that the government has not yet decided on a cut-date either for general election or election of the office of the president.

“The government has yet to decide date for both elections and when a decision is taken, it would be released to the media," said the minister while talking to journalists here after inaugurating an exhibition of photographs of volunteers.

Commenting on President Gen Pervez Musharraf's address to women at the Convention Centre, Mr Durrani said he has announced his agenda to restore the basic rights, honour and dignity of the suppressed and deprived segments of society, adding that president's focus was on three vital segments of society i.e. poor people, women and minorities, who had been deprived and weakened by suppressors in the past.

The president wishes to empower the weaker segments of society by passing on the benefits of national progress to the poor and deprived people.

"The government launched unprecedented development works in Balochistan as the people of Balochistan are mostly ignored and deprived," he said and added empowerment of women, the poor and minorities would be ensured by all means.

“I urge all those politicians who are opposing the Protection of Women Act (PWA) to come forward and openly submit their viewpoint," said the minister, adding that those politicians were aware of the fact that the masses were favouring the Act,” said the minister.

To a question regarding the reported PML-MQM row, Mr Durrani said both the parties are coalition partners and differences, if any, would soon be resolved amicably.

Earlier, the minister formally inaugurated the National Volunteers Movement’s Clean Pakistan Drive starting from December 10.
