KARACHI, Dec 5: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday urged all civic bodies and land controlling authorities in the city to finalise their development, water and sewerage related projects in the light of the new master plan so that the infrastructure of the city could be revamped on modern lines.

Chairing a high-level meeting at his office, the nazim asked all the stakeholders to submit their proposals or suggestions regarding the master plan at the earliest to finalise the document that would be tabled in the City Council by the end of this month for final approval.

He also asked all civic administrations in the city to depute their officers for effective coordination in the upcoming mega projects under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded US$800 million Karachi Mega City Development Project (KMCDP). The projects would be initiated in the first quarter of year 2007.

He also informed the meeting that the ADB consultants for water and sewerage programmes and solid waste management had arrived in the city to accelerate the pace of work on their funded projects.

The city government has established a Local Support Unit (LSU), which will also coordinate with all civic administrations, he informed.

The nazim said that the master plan was prepared by the present city government, which had sent the copies to all stakeholders some two months back and majority of them had already presented their proposals in this regard.

He categorically said that the new master plan would be implemented across the city and all the stakeholders would be responsible for its implementation in their respective jurisdictions.

Mr Kamal urged all civic agencies to prepare their plan particularly of water, sewerage and drainage system as these plans were crucial for the revamping of city’s infrastructure.

He also underlined the need for better coordination among all stakeholders to provide maximum relief to the citizens.

KMCDP Coordinator Roshan Ali Shaikh and EDO Master Plan Iftikhar Qaimkhani briefed the meeting on the ADB funded project and the new Master Plan.

ADB consultants, representatives of all stakeholders, secretary land utilisation, Board of Revenue, chairmen Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and Port Qasim Authority, representatives of telephone, gas and power utilities, DHA, Military Land and Cantonments Karachi region, Lyari Development Authority, Civil Aviation Authority and senior officials of the city government attended the meeting.
