PESHAWAR, Nov 26: The Islami Jamiat Tulaba has finalised arrangements for a students rally scheduled to be held in the University of Peshawar on November 30.

Speaking at a news conference here on Sunday, Peshawar University IJT Nazim Hafiz Ibrar Ahmad said they would go ahead with their programme despite announcement of ban on the rally by the university administration. "We would give every sacrifice (needed) to ensure the holding of the rally," he added.

The rally would be peaceful but if that administration and police tried to disrupt it, ‘we will retaliate,” the IJT leader warned.

He said that the rally would be addressed by president of the university teachers' association Dr Sarwar Naseem, journalist Mujibur Rahman Shami, NWFP College Teachers Association leader Sabz Ali Marwat and leaders of other student organisations.

He said that thousands of students from different parts of the province would participate in the rally.

Mr Ibrar said that the rally was a part of the IJT’s countrywide campaign titled “Save education, save the country.’ A students rights caravan scheduled for November 27 to 29 and a students rights rally in the University of Peshawar on November 30 were other components of the drive.

He said since the day one after the creation of the country, indifferent attitude had been adopted to education and the students.

Presently, he added, self-finance scheme, privatisation of educational institutions and heavy increase in fees were making it difficult for the poor students to get education.

On the other hand, he added, ‘conspiracies are being made to secularise the nation though expulsion of Quranic verses and hadis from curriculum and introduction of music classes and the Aga Khan board.’He said that through the ban on student unions, the students had been kept away from policy making and struggle for their rights.

He called upon the government to restore student unions.
