Shujaat asks MMA to review decision

Published November 24, 2006

ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: Pakistan Muslim League president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has asked the MMA to review its decision to resign from assemblies for continuity of democratic system.

Talking to a private TV channel, he said he was in contact with MMA leaders Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Maulana Fazlur Rehman and wanted that the MMA should withdraw its decision to allow assemblies complete their tenure.

However, he made it clear that the government would hold by-elections if MMA resigned from assemblies because it was a constitutional requirement.

The PML president said the Women Protection Bill would be passed without any amendment, adding that the parliament could amend the bill with simple majority at any subsequent stage.—APP
