KASUR, Nov 23: Three doctors, including a surgeon, and six paramedical staffers of DHQ hospital were booked and arrested on Thursday for the death of a girl owing to their negligence and delay in operation.
Reports said Sumaira, 18, of Raja Jang had been brought to hospital in a critical condition two weeks ago.
Earlier, she was diagnosed appendicitis by Dr Zulfiqar of DHQ hospital at his private clinic. But the family managed to take her to the DHQ hospital as it failed to arrange Rs15,000 for operation at the private clinic of Dr Zulfiqar. However, an uncle of the victim paid Rs1,800 to Dr Zulfiqar for checkup and other medicines.
According to Sumaira’s father M Akbar, Dr Zulfiqar had insulted the family for bringing the patient at DHQ hospital instead of his private clinic. Surgeon M Akram and Dr Safdar told the family that the patient would be operated upon at 1:00pm next day, he said.
Next day the patient was referred to a private lab of Dr Tariq Bashir on Khara Road for an ultrasound, Mr Akbar said and added that when Sumaira was brought back from the lab, none of the doctor, surgeon or other paramedical staff was available in the ward.
Akbar said despite being informed, Dr Zulfiqar did not reach the emergency ward and came at 9:00am as per his routine. In the meantime, Sumaira died, he said.
An inquiry team in its report on Wednesday found three doctors and six paramedical staff guilty. Kasur police have registered a case against the accused and arrested them.
