Call for waiving bank loans

QUETTA, Nov 21: The Balochistan Zamindar Action Committee has threatened to stage a demonstration in front of parliament if the federal government failed to write off loans of farmers as promised by President Pervez Musharraf.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Agha Taj Mohammad, chairman of the committee, said that President Musharraf had made the promise on May 22 in a public meeting in Hub but the decision had so far not been implemented, adding that some officials were creating problems in the way of implementing the president’s decision.

He said that the government had issued a notification to write off farming loans in Kalat and Zhob districts but similar notifications relating to other districts had been withheld.

He said that a farmers’ delegation would go Islamabad on Dec 2 to meet the officials concerned to expedite action on the order of President Musharraf but warned that the growers would hold protests in the capital if the federal government responded negatively.

Mr Taj Agha also convened a meeting of the committee in Quetta on Nov 27 to finalise the programme for the Islamabad.
