LAHORE, Nov 18: Al Khan and Mixed Bag craved out hard fought victories in the TCL Polo Cup on Saturday.
Two goals by Omar Niazi supported by 1 ½ goal handicap enabled Al Khan to trounce a strong Lahore Chatkhara 5 1/2-5, eclipsing Shah Qubilai Alam's performance, who scored all five for the losers.
Al Khan increased their lead 3 1/2-0, scoring two goals in the first chukker. Omar scored his first on a field attempt while Raja Sattar banged home, converting a 30-yard penalty hit.
Shah Qubilai Alam showed his presence scoring back-to-back goals in the second chukker to reduce the lead 3 1/2-2. Qubilai first scored on a solo field attempt and then cashed in on a 40-yard penalty hit.
In the third chukker both teams scored one goal each. Hashim Kamal Agha struck for the winners while Qubilai converted a 40-yard penalty hit to again reduce the margin (4 1/2-3).
In the fourth chukker, beleaguered Qubilai eventually brought his team ahead 5-4 1/2 for the first time scoring twice in a row. First, he found the net on a field attempt and then capitalised a penalty hit. But Omar's second goal in the dying minutes proved a decider when he converted a 30-yard penalty hit to seal the fate of the match.
A sudden-death goal in the extra fifth chukker by Syed Mohammad Raza, who in all scored four, led Mixed Bag to a 5-4 win against Punjab Rangers.
In the eventful first chukker, both sides pumped in two goals, each.
Raza drew first blood while Irfan Ali Hyder added one as Mixed Bag made an early 2-0 lead. But Punjab Rangers retaliated and equalised the score, before the close of the first chukker. Agha Murtaza Ali Khan, who scored three and Saeed Aslam Khan found the net.
No goal was scored in the second and third chukker. But again it was a neck-and-neck fight in the fourth chukker , which left both the teams at 4-4. Raza scored both goals for Mixed Bag while Agha Murtaza Ali for the Rangers.
