Harris set to play 200th one-dayer

WELLINGTON, Feb 15: New Zealand all-rounder Chris Harris will play his 200th One-day International against England in the second match of the series here Saturday and skipper Stephen Fleming says he is still as dynamic as always.

“Harry’s worth his weight in gold,” Fleming said. “There is a youthful exuberance which shines through, although he doesn’t look all that young any more.

“He’s been there so often for us and it’s great to see he has the drive to want to play a lot longer.”

Harris got a duck in the first match Wednesday — a victim of Darren Gough’s second spell when he took four wickets in two overs — but is often the man to help New Zealand out of trouble.

The 32-year-old Cantabrian, who will be only the 25th player to pass the 200 ODI mark, has scored 3589 ODI runs at an average of 31.20.

He has scored just one century, a majestic 130 against Australia at Chennai during the 1996 World Cup, but has 13 half-centuries to his name.

Harris has also been not out 55 times, which is a testament to his stickability at the end of the innings.

“I love the challenge,” Harris said. “Sometimes by the time I get in there isn’t much time but there is still a job to do.

“I want to play as long as possible because I still get a buzz taking the field in the black uniform.”—Reuters
