JHANG, Nov 9: People have been demanding construction of a new bridge on Chenab river near Jhang for the last many years.
Reports said the colonial era Riwaz bridge was being used for both rail and road traffic, causing a great deal of inconvenience to residents.
On Wednesday morning, about 300 to 400 students of Jhang colleges had gathered near the existing bridge to press their demand for construction of a new one. In the meantime, a heavy contingent of police, led by Saddar and traffic DSPs, reached there and foiled students’ attempt to block traffic.
The police officers succeeded to persuade the protesters who dispersed peacefully.
Later, the student leaders presented a memorandum at the office of the district nazim, demanding early construction of a new bridge on the right bank of Chenab.
