Racegoers’ plea

Published November 9, 2006

KARACHI, Nov 8: Despite the setting up of a high powered Match Racing Committee at the Karachi Race Club (KRC) sometimes back, there are still a number of shortcomings which needs to be looked into, say the racegoers.

For instance, change of rider before the commencement of the race has become a regular practice. The sudden change after declaration sounds a bit of a foul play.

The racegoers are of the opinion that rider should only be changed on medical grounds or in case he is suspended for ‘unsatisfactory riding’.

When the announcement of change of rider is made on the eve of the race it changes the mood of punters. Sometimes, a good rider is replaced by his weak contemporary on a fancied horse which lessens the chances of his or her triumph.

If a rider is found guilty of not riding his mount satisfactorily he should be dealt severe punishment so that it serves as warning for others, which is not forthcoming in many a cases these days. —AZ
