KARACHI, Nov 7: An alleged bandit was killed and his accomplice was injured in what police claimed an encounter on Tuesday night.
Police said that two suspects later identified as Irfan and Rizwan were snatching cellphone and cash in front of Zakaria Mosque, Burnes Road when the encounter took place.
Police said that a man was buying fruits from a vendor after parking his car when two suspects appeared on motorcycle and snatched his cellphone. A police party appeared on the spot resulting in an exchange of fire between bandits and police.
SHO Irfan Zaman said that one of the bandits, Rizwan, sustained bullet wounds. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His accomplice, Irfan Shah, was also wounded in the encounter. Irfan Shah owned a shop in Eidgah, the SHO said adding that they used to sell stolen mobile phones in Lahore.
Meanwhile, a bandit who was killed in an encounter near Mazar-i-Quaid late on Monday night was later identified as policeman.
Police said that Waseem Ahmed and his wife were near the mausoleum when two suspects on a motorcycle intercepted them and deprived the couple of cash and cellphones.
The couple immediately informed a police mobile about the incident. The police mobile chased the suspects ensuing an encounter.
Police said that one of the bandits escaped while his accomplice suffered a bullet wound. His body was shifted to Jinnah hospital where he was identified as Tufail a constable posted at the Central Jail, police said.
ARRESTS: The CID on Tuesday arrested three suspects of Sipah-i-Sahaba recovering arms and ammunition from their possession.
Identified as Tariq Maviya, Muhammad Taufeeq and Waheed Niazi, the suspects were involved in several target killings. “The suspects have links with the members of the Asif Chottu group,” SP CID Raja Umar Khattab said.
Waheed Niazi is the brother of Akbar Niazi, the police constable involved in suicide bombing at Masjid-i-Hydri in 2004, he said.
Meanwhile, police picked up more than 100 suspects during raids between the night of Monday and Tuesday for their alleged involvement in street crimes.
Police have accelerated their crackdown on criminals involved in street crimes and raided various places across the city.
“We have 250 suspects in custody allegedly involved in street crimes,” said acting CCPO Tariq Jamil.
The suspects also disclosed the names of those involved in trade of stolen phones.
Shahid Sehr of Karachi Electronics Dealers’ Association said, “if any action was taken against those involved in illegal business, we would support it. But if any injustice is done to KEDA members, we will raise our concern and hold protest against it.”
