KARACHI, Nov 6: The academic session of first year MBBS 2006 started at the Dow Medical College here on Nov 6. The vice-chancellor of the Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof Masood Hameed Khan, congratulated students and their parents on getting admission purely on merit after a tough competition. In his address to students, he said they should be prepared for punctuality, regularity and hard work so as to keep pace with academics and become a good doctor.

He asked students that serving humanity should be their top priority. Prof Khan said that the DUHS came into existence in Dec 2003 and he joined it on Jan 14, 2004 as its first vice-chancellor.

The vice-chancellor also threw light on the achievements of the DUHS during the past two and a half years, such as setting up of examination department, professional development centre for graduate and postgraduate students, digital library, etc, besides evaluation of various departments of the Dow and Sindh medical colleges.

He also mentioned the upcoming dental college, named as Dr Ishratul Ibad Institute of Oral Sciences and the Dow International Medical College, in which admission would be announced by the end of this month and end of December 2006, respectfully.

Prof Khan also informed them about the four-year bachelor programme of the Institute of Medical Technology and Institute of Nursing that started in Jan 2006.

The principal of the Dow Medical College, Prof Salahuddin Afsar, gave a detailed presentation regarding academics and facilities to the students. He informed the students that 75 per cent attendance was mandatory for appearing in the exams.

MBBS: The University of Karachi on Monday informed candidates of all the medical colleges affiliated with the KU that the exam forms and fee of the third professional MBBS annual examination 2007 would be accepted from Nov 13 to 25.

According to a KU notification, Rs2,050 fee would be collected from students including Rs2,000 as examination/marks certificate fee and Rs50 as sports fee.—PPI
