MITHI, Oct 19: A woman brought to the Mithi civil hospital from a remote village because there was no woman medical officer at the Nagarparkar taluka hospital, died on Wednesday.

The woman Champa, 35, wife of Chahno Kolhi, was admitted to the Mithi hospital for a delivery. The woman, from Ghartiari village, was mother of six children.

Mithi civil surgeon Lal Bux Bhatti told Dawn that the woman had been brought to the hospital in coma and she was suffering from hepatitis.

It may be mentioned that the Tharparkar district has a population of one million but only three woman medical officers are posted at the Mithi civil hospital.

No lady doctor has been posted at taluka headquarters hospitals in Diplo, Nagarparkar and Chhachhro. Maternity cases from far-flung areas of the sand-swept region are taken to Mithi which causes a lot of inconvenience to poor people.

Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim has not solved the issue of posting lady doctors at taluka hospitals.

More than 50 per cent posts of medical officers and specialists are also lying vacant in the district for several years.
