PESHAWAR, Oct 18: A Russian-made missile landed in a field in the Landi Akhund Mohammad area adjacent to the Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency on Tuesday. “Luckily, the missile landed in the field, otherwise it would have caused a lot of destruction,” said a senior police official.
Fired from an unknown destination, the Russian MBR-12 missile weighing 25kg landed at 1:10am.
According to officials of the bomb disposal squad, the missile with a range of 12 to 15 kilometres can be fired from a special barrel launcher or ignited through battery.
SHO of Sarband Police Station Ameer Sultan claimed that the missile had been fired from Bara tehsil. He said that the political administration in Bara had been informed about the incident, and the tribal authorities had promised to take action against the culprits.
Officials in the Police Headquarters believe that the missile was misdirected by the activist of Lashkar-i-Islami or Ansarul Islam, currently engaged in armed clash.
However, sources in the tribal region said they had no information about any such fight till late on Monday.
