KATHMANDU, Feb 13: Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested the Pakistan government to take “necessary action” against a junior embassy official who was allegedly involved in a fake currency case.

The police had reported his involvement on Jan 3, a day before the Saarc summit was to start here.

According to a press release of the ministry, issued on Tuesday evening, an official investigation into the incident “showed the involvement” of Siraj Ahmed Siraj, an upper division clerk of the embassy, in a case relating to the seizure of fake Indian and US currencies. Police had released him shortly afterwards, saying the arrest was a case of mistaken identity.

“His Majesty’s Government of Nepal has requested the Government of Pakistan to take necessary action against him,” the ministry said. It also referred to media reports saying Siraj left for home on Friday on his own.

There has not been any immediate comment by the Pakistan embassy on the issue.

It may be recalled that President Parvez Musharraf raised the issue with King Gyanendra and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba who promised to investigate the matter.
