College girls told to wear scarves

Published October 9, 2006

KOHAT, Oct 8: The administration of the Government Postgraduate Girls’ College here has made it compulsory for students to wear scarf and veil while in the institution.

Students told Dawn that the new principal soon after taking charge issued orders that any girl found without scarf and veil would be fined and disciplinary action would be taken against her. The college’s teachers said the principal had issued a notification in this regard.

The reason given for the restriction is that gardeners, watchmen and peons roam about freely inside the college and, therefore, the students should cover their heads and faces.

There is no such restriction in other girls’ colleges in Kohat.

The students complained that instead of restricting the movement of the men inside the college, a restriction had been imposed on them, which could not be justified. The restriction will be effective from Monday.
