KARACHI, Oct 2: The judicial magistrate, South, Munawwar Sultana, sentenced five men to a 10-year term for making preparation to commit a dacoity.
Accused Sher Bahadur, Wasi Haider Khawaja, Ijaz, Rashid Illahi and Maqsood were arrested on April 29, 2003 by the Defence police who had also seized illegal weapons from them.
The magistrate also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 each on the convicts and ordered that the defaulter on the payment would have to undergo an additional one-year term.
ACQUITTED: The judicial magistrate, South, Abdul Qayyum, acquitted three female activists of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) in a case pertaining to breaking up the police lock-up.
The magistrate exonerated Najma Baji, Shama Leghari and Shazia from the charges for want of incriminating evidence. The three women were booked in the case by the Women Police Station on Oct 15, 1999.
FIR: The district and sessions judge, West, Muhammed Jawaid Alam, ordered the registration of an FIR against an inspector of the investigation squad.
Inspector Zulfiqar allegedly confined Pervez, Ashraf and Razzak in his illegal custody. The detainees were recovered during a raid conducted by a judicial magistrate on the orders of the district judge.
