Senior SQM leader joins JUI

SWABI, Feb 13: Former member of provincial assembly and Swabi Qaumi Mahaz Senior Vice-President Abdul Majid Khan announced on Tuesday that he had quit the Mahaz and joined the Jamiat Ulema Islam (F).   a  press conference here Tuesday.

Majid Khan was elected MPA twice from PF-27 on the Awami National Party’s ticket. He defeated former NWFP governor Fazl-i-Haq in 1988. When the ANP refused to award him the party ticket in 1997 elections, he joined the party’s dissidents  who established the SQM.

National Awami Party Pakistan leader Ajmal Khattak and Tehrik-i-Insaf leader Imran Khan had visited his house recently.

During the United States led coalition’s attacks over Afghanistan he played a leading role in staging protest demonstration against the bombardment and according to him the JUI(F) approach towards the  Taliban had led him to joining it.

Replying to a question at a press conference, he said the Wali Bagh leaders had contacted him but he had refused to join the ANP.

He claimed that after the 1993 elections the ANP leaders had demanded that he should pay Rs1,25,000 in the party funds.
