KARACHI, Sept 28: A young woman with her infant girl committed suicide by jumping into one of the Damloti Wells situated in the outskirts of the city, police said on Thursday.

The body of 25-year-old Surayya, wife of Ali Nawaz, was recovered from the well on Thursday by local people. The body of her 25-day-old daughter, Saba, was recovered on Wednesday night by area people, police said.

The wife of a labourer who often used to remain out of work, Surayya, had actually set out for her parents’ home, reportedly after getting fed up with domestic discord at her in-laws’ in Hashim Jokio Goth.

An official of the Memon Goth police station quoting the area people said that instead of heading for her parents’ house, Surayya came across the Damloti wells and ended their lives by jumping into the well.

It was several hours later that someone saw a floating `chaadar’ in the well and informed others about it.

Soon the news speared and reached Hashim Jokio Goth. Her in-laws and parents also arrived there.

According to the police, they had sought help from the fire department for the recovery of the bodies, but they refused to come citing the poor visibility at night.

Subsequently, people of the area started recovery efforts on a self-help basis and managed to recover the body of the little girl floating in the well. Keeping in line with the traditions, the family didn’t allow any legal formalities and took away the bodies for burial.

“What we have so far been able to gather is poor economic conditions and domestic altercations drove Surayya to jump into the well along with her newborn daughter,” a police official of Memon Goth remarked.

FIREMAN DIES: Station Officer of the Orangi Fire Station Zafar Akhtar succumbed to his burn wounds at the Civil Hospital on Thursday.

He had suffered burns while fighting the raging fire in a chemical godown in Site last week which was controlled after a 48-hour operation.

Zafar was shifted to the Burns ward of the Civil Hospital where he remained under treatment. An FIR has also been registered at the Site police station in connection with the fire.
