SADIQABAD, Sept 27: Chachran Sharif, a town along river Sindh, is facing land erosion. The river has started changing its course. Now it is running at a distance of 10 to 15 feet from Chachran Sharif. Land erosion has forced many of its residents to move to safer places.

The erosion has also caused a damage to spur No 2 and irrigation department officials have started repairing the damaged portions with the help of heavy equipment.

The people residing near the spur protest against the official apathy and demand immediate repair of the spur. If timely measures are not taken, the town will cease to exist, they say.

The situation is also posing a serious danger to the Panjnad canal system, the source of irrigation to thousands of acres of land.

In his application faxed to the Punjab chief minister, Save Chachran Society secretary-general Khwaja Khalid Irtiza has pointed out that about 12 feet portion of the spur has almost been washed away.

Now land erosion on spur No 1 is going on and if no measures are taken, Chachran Sharif and the Panjnad canal system will be swept away, he said.
