LAHORE, Sept 23: PPP MPA Samiullah Khan has submitted an adjournment motion in the Punjab assembly for a debate on what he said provision of arsenic mixed water to the people of Lahore.
According to the text of the motion released here by the MPA on Saturday, a report by National University of Science and Technology (NUST) said the underground water reservoir of Lahore contained arsenic material, negating the Wasa’s claim that it was providing clean drinking water to the people.
According to the report, supplying such water to the people was like slow poisoning. Samples taken from different areas of the city indicated high content of arsenic in water. And this was owing to the strategy of Wasa to provide extra water, fast lowering the level of underground water table.
The motion said the issue was serious as around 175,000 to 200,000 people annually die of arsenic mixed water throughout the world. The most affected were Bangladeshis. Arsenic causes lungs, renal and skin complications, diabetes and cancer. —Staff Reporter
