DHAKA, Sept 21: The Bangladesh authorities recovered 51 bodies of fishermen from the Bay of Bengal on Thursday following a violent storm that whipped the coastal areas two days before, killing 60 people.
Some 3,500 fishermen and a naval commander went missing in rough seas and most of them are feared dead as several hundred fishing trawlers capsized in the Bay of Bengal during the storm.
The sudden storm and recurring gusty winds lashed the coastal districts on Tuesday, damaging over 1,000 houses and injuring 100 people.
Some 27 trawlers with 245 fishermen and crew went missing off Patuakhali coast.
COMMANDER UNTRACED: A navy ship, BNS Shaheed Farid, and its skipper, Lt Commander Firoz Kabir, could not be traced till Thursday evening. The patrol vessel overturned near Chittagong during the storm.
Rescue operations were hampered due to rough weather. Helicopters, naval ships and rescue boats have been trying hard since Wednesday to salvage the ship.
