NEW YORK, Sept 15: The Kashmir issue will figure in President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s address to the inaugural session of 61st UN General Assembly here on Sept 19 (Tuesday).

This was disclosed by Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN Munir Akram during a briefing to the Pakistani media team that is here to cover the UNGA and the President’s visit to the US.

The president is scheduled to arrive here on Saturday night.

Mr Akram said the president would be making a direct reference to the Kashmir issue in his address and underscore that relations with India centre on a “durable and just” solution of the dispute.

Giving a briefing at the Pakistan Media Centre set up at the Roosevelt Hotel on the eve of President Musharraf’s arrival here, Mr Akram said the high point of the president’s visit in New York will be his address at the UNGA. The president, who will be the fifth speaker, will specifically draw attention to the crisis in Lebanon.

Another key issue will be the impasse over Iran’s nuclear issue, Mr Akram said. Iraq was also an issue of concern that would figure in discussions, he added.

Referring to Afghanistan and the issue of the campaign against terrorism, Mr Akram said Pakistan had a ‘clear strategy’ of how to address it. “We need to address it in a multifaceted way,” he said, adding that the emphasis in the West had been more on the operational and military aspects of it.
