LAHORE, Sept 6: As many as 108 people were killed in recent flash floods which swept through 21 districts of the province completely destroying 3,070 houses besides damaging standing crops over 175,000 acres of land.
According to official sources, in total around 900,000 acres of land in 1,152 villages was affected across the province.
The districts affected by the deluge are Jhelum, Layyah, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, Gujrat, Chakwal, Narowal, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Mandi Bahauddin, Khushab, D G Khan, Attock, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Muzaffargarh, Jhang, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Sahiwal.
Sources said that the relief department had so for released Rs 20.3 million for providing food, medicines transportation and other facilities to the affected. Of this amount, Rs 6 million had been given to the heirs of those who perished in the flood.
Over 300,000 people were evacuated from the affected areas in cooperation with army and other departments. More than 100 camps have been set up in different districts, including 25 in Gujrat, eight in Narowal, 12 in Mianwali, 20 in Bhakkar , 18 in Muzaffargarh and 20 in Rajanpur for the marooned. —APP
