KARACHI, Sept 6: A partial strike was observed in parts of the city in response to a call given by the Sindh based nationalist parties to protest against the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti in Kolhu on Aug 26.The strike was effective in Lyari town where shops and markets remained closed and traffic was thin. The affected areas included Khadda, Nawabad, Memon Society, Juna Kumarwara, Chawkiwara and Aath Chowk as shopkeepers pulled down shutters to mourn the death of the slain leader. By and large, the situation remained normal as no any untoward incident took place.

Tension in Ali Mohammad Mohalla Kalri eased on Wednesday as arrested youth were released after a meeting of the area notables with TPO Shahnawaz. Lyari Town Nazim and UC-6 nazim also attended the meeting.

The TPO sought the support of community leaders in maintaining the law and order and emphasized the need for an effective liaison between community leaders and police.

Meanwhile, MPA Rafique Engineer claimed that police raids in Malir, Old Golimar and other Baloch areas in Karachi continued, saying this situation is creating unrest among people.

He urged the government to direct the police to stop conducting raids on houses of political activists, because it was fomenting ethnic feeling among people.

The MPA maintained that people should not be arrested merely because they were condemning a particular act of the government. He said right of dissent is the right of every citizen.

The strike was also effective in areas of Gadap town, including Murad Memon Goth, Jam Goth, and some parts Malir, where people voluntarily closed their businesses.
