Hudood bill questioned

Published September 2, 2006

ISLAMABAD, Sept 1: Members of the People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) in the National Assembly select committee on the Criminal Law Amendment (Protection of Women) Act 2006 on Friday expressed concern over the government’s move to change certain clauses of the bill.

Talking to Dawn after attending the select committee’s meeting, PPP’s information secretary Sherry Rehman said the government had inserted a new clause 496(b) in the bill, making adultery punishable under the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Ms Rehman said that upon her strong protest, the committee had agreed to review the bill in its next meeting on Monday morning. She, however, said if the government insisted on approving the bill with the insertion of the new clause, then the PPP would review its decision to support the bill.
