Infant dies in roof collapse

LAHORE, Aug 28: A two-year-old girl died while her two siblings and parents suffered injuries in a roof collapse in Sabzazar on Monday. This is the second incident during the last 24 hours in the city reportedly due to Sunday’s heavy rain.

Sabir, his wife Asmat and their three children - Kausar, Irfan and Rehana - were asleep in their single storey house near Kharak bus stop when its roof caved in. The neighbours, along with rescue teams, pulled them out of rubble and shifted them to hospital where Rehana succumbed to her injuries. The condition of Kausar and Irfan was stated to be critical.

Meawhile, Sunday night and Monday morning rain affected life in the entire city.

The Met office recorded 35 mm rain in the city and 30 mm in airport area and forecast cloudy conditions with chances of thunderstorm and rain for Tuesday.

The main DHA Road, Walton Road, The Mall, all other streets and lanes in Cantonment area, Allama Iqbal Road (Garhi Shahu), Garden Town, Model Town, Ichhra, Samanabad, Nisbat Road, Nabha Road, Begum Kot Road, Ravi Road, Iqbal Town Main Boulevard and other roads were giving the look of water channels even two hours after the rain.

The Zahoor Elahi Road, where the residence of the chief minister is also located, was also under knee-deep water as two Wasa suckers were busy improving the situation till 4pm on Monday.

Dug-up roads added to the miseries of motorists, specially in Gulberg. —Staff Reporter
