QUITO, Aug 28: The oldest person in the world, 116-year-old Ecuadoran Maria Esther Heredia Lecaro, died over the weekend in the port city of Guayaquil, one of her granddaughters said on Monday.

Heredia Lecaro died in “complete peace” just 20 days before her 117th birthday, her granddaughter said.

“She died as she lived: peacefully. She never had a bad temper. She never knew stress, and up until the last moment, she had a tranquil face.”

Born in 1889, Heredia Lecaro was named by the Guinness book of records as the world’s oldest person in December 2005 after the death of Elizabeth Bolden, 115, of the United States.—AFP
