SUKKUR, Aug 10: With the flood water reaching Sindh, more than 100 villages in kutcha area of Ghotki and Kashmore districts were submerged on Thursday. According to officials of the irrigation department, the Indus river was eroding at 11th mile of the KK bund near Kashmore.
The Tori bund, Ghora Ghat bund and Qadirpur loop bund are under threat as 700,000 cusecs water is expected to pass through the Guddu barrage on midnight of Aug 11 and 12.
Villages affected in Ghotki district are: Rauf Chachar, Saifal Chachar, Dawood Talai, Lalan Sundrani, Raees Wahab Chachar, Karim Bux Chachar, Majeed Chachar and Deh Jafferabad.
About 35 villages of the Kashmore district came under water.
Some of them are: Buland Bhutto, Attur Mazari, Haji Hassan Mazari, Ghulam Qadir Machhi, Kharor, Bahadur Nehar and Chitti Masjid.
Army personnel along with 15 boats have reached Buxapur and camping in building of the high school for flood emergency duty.
Officials of the irrigation department have encamped at the KK bund and stone dumping was under way to strengthen it.
The Tori bund and Ghora Ghat bund were also under serious threat as last year the highest flash flood which had passed through the Guddu barrage was 543,000 cusecs.
This year, about 700,000 cusecs is expected to pass due to which extra precautionary measures have been adopted.
In Ghotki district, stone pitching was in progress along the Qadirpur loop bund.
Reports said the bund was under tremendous pressure while irrigation officials and army were patrolling vulnerable sites round the clock.
On Thursday evening, upstream at the Guddu barrage was recorded at 401,263 cusecs and downstream was 381,433 cusecs.
At the Sukkur barrage, upstream was 294,670 cusecs and downstream was 240,869 cusecs.
Irrigation sources said the water level at the Sukkur barrage was steady and will remain in same condition for next 36 hours.
Constant rise is being observed at the Guddu barrage and highest flash flood of the season is expected to pass through both the barrage between August 12 and 14.
HYDERABAD: The water level in the Indus river at the Kotri barrage is rising constantly.
Irrigation authorities told Dawn on Thursday that the water level at upstream of the barrage at 12 noon was recorded at 127,161 cusecs and downstream 101,082 cusecs.
This included water being released from the Manchhar lake.
On Wednesday, about 3,000 cusecs of the lake water was released into the river through Aral wah as the level in the river continued to increase with the passage of each day.
It may be mentioned that in order to protect Manchhar lake, the water release committee had allowed release of water from the lake at the ratio of 1,000 cusecs of lake water to 50,000 cusecs of the Indus waters.
SHIKHARPUR: According to the district administration all protective bunds of the Indus river in the district are safe.
Officials said there was no possibility of flood in the district despite high flow of water in the river.
A meeting held here on Thursday, finalized precautionary and relief measures to fight flood.
DCO Khwaja Shafiq Ahmed told the meeting that the district administration had warned dwellers of kutcha as well as people living near protective bunds through distribution of pamphlets.
He said that they had been asked to shift to safer places in the wake of flood.
