RAWALPINDI, Aug 8: Five policemen including the station house officer (SHO) of Cantonment police were suspended on Tuesday on the charge of delaying the registration of a robbery case in which the flight engineer of Punjab chief minister’s plane was the victim, police sources said.

The suspended policemen including the SHO inspector Waqar Azeem, sub-inspectors Mohammad Ramzan and Mansab Mehmood, constables Hassan and Zaheer have been directed to report to the police lines Rawalpindi.

A spokesman for DPO Rawalpindi Saud Aziz said Mohammad Rafiq arrived at Rawalpindi railway station at 11pm on August 5 and was heading towards his home when a gang of robbers intercepted him and dragged him inside their car and sped away.

The robbers looted Rs42,400 from him and pushed him out in Westridge area and escaped.

The robbery victim went to the police station and lodged a complaint for the registration of the case which according to the spokesman was delayed.

Later, an inquiry was ordered into the complaint which found the police staff guilty, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, two robberies were committed while two persons were deprived of their cars in different parts of the city on Monday, police said.

Saima Irum complained to the Banni police that she was waiting for a bus near Naz Cinema chowk when two motorbike riders intercepted her and snatched her purse containing Rs30,000.

Similarly, two robbers entered into a house in Gulshanabad (Saddar Barooni) and looted five cellphones, half-a-dozen gold bangles and other jewellery items.

Naveed Ahmed’s car (HW-576) was stolen from Satellite Town while Ghulam Rasool’s car (GAH-3212) was taken away from Saddar.

Staff Reporter from Islamabad adds: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chaudhry Iftikhar on Tuesday ordered an inquiry into the escape of five handcuffed accused from the lock-up of Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) the other day.

The IGP has tasked Superintendent of Police (SP), Headquarters, Asim Gulzar with holding the inquiry and submitting a report within three days.
