ISLAMABAD, Aug 6: Margalla police have registered a case against a professor of paediatrics at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) on charges of fraud.

Medical Officer (MO) Dr Muqadar Shah lodged a complaint with the police, stating that Prof Mumtaz Hussain gave him a cheque for Rs45,000 against his services which he performed in quake-hit areas in Azad Kashmir, but the cheque was dishonoured.

The MO said the professor had given him the cheque saying that Unicef had paid the amount.

A number of doctors were sent to the earthquake affected areas by the professor who charged fee from Unicef against the former’s services.

He said Prof Hussain allegedly embezzled the amount received from Unicef by depositing it in his personal bank account.

The MO also said that the professor had asked the doctors to refer patients belonging to quake-hit areas to his private clinic and gave them his visiting cards for this purpose.

Dr Shah said at the time of departure, the doctors singed a pro forma stating that they would also carry out vaccination against different diseases including polio, hepatitis and TB, however, the professor did not provide them with any vaccine for the purpose.

The MO said he had also lodged a complaint with the Pims administration stating that the professor was threatening that he would destroy his career.

Pims Executive Director Fazle Hadi, when contacted, said prior to the complaint, the hospital administration was unaware of the professor’s practice of taking money from Unicef for sending doctors to earthquake hit areas.
