KARACHI, Aug 6: Electricity in various localities played hide-and-seek since the start of the rain on Sunday afternoon as the KESC’s distribution system developed faults. Tripping of pole-mounted transformers (PMTs) also caused power failures in different areas.

However, a spokesman for the KESC insisted that the system worked perfectly and there were no breakdowns on Sunday. He said that since the weather condition had improved, the system was not overloaded. The city’s power demand was met easily and the power utility did not feel loadshedding necessary, he added.

He said that there were some localised faults that had been attended and rectified immediately.

Contrary to his claim, consumers from various localities complained of power failures.

Khalid Rafiq, a resident of Block-L, North Nazimabad, said that the power supply to his area was suspended as soon as it started raining.

Several attempts were made to contact the centralised complaint centre at ‘118’ but it remained busy. He said the supply was restored after more than two hours.

A consumer in Block-15, Federal B Area, said that the power supply was discontinued twice for several hours.

A resident of Liaquatabad, Sharjeel Ahmed, said that power supply kept playing hide-and-seek whole the day in his locality since the start of rainfall. He said that the local KESC office was approached but the officials there did not give a satisfactory response.

A consumer, Riaz, from the Rizwan Cooperative Housing Society, Scheme-33, said that power supply was suspended at about noon and restored at 3:30pm.

Another consumer, Mohammad Sami, from Orangi No. 5, said that the unannounced loadshedding had become a routine to his locality.

He said that a prolonged breakdown also occurred in his area with the first drop of rain on Sunday. He said power supply was restored after four hours.
