ECP staff under pressure

Published August 6, 2006

LAHORE, Aug 5: The on-going campaign to prepare a fresh voters’ list is being affected at some places by pressure from local political activists and non-cooperation by people, sources said on Saturday.

According to them, a number of enumerators distributing forms had reported that they were being pressurised to give more forms than required in an area apparently to get registered extra voters. They said resistance to the effect had led to misbehaviour.

In one such incident, an enumerator was manhandled by some people in a Lahore locality a few days ago. They also snatched forms from him as a result of which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) authorities got registered a case against two persons with the North Cantt police.

The sources said people not knowing the importance of getting them registered as voters were not cooperating with the staff at some places as well.

The ECP staff had started distributing voters forms on July 24 and they would collect the filled forms by Sept 11. The final computerised list of voters would be published next year.

Meanwhile, the ECP officials have appealed to the people to cooperate with the staff in making a fair voters’ list. They said they could approach the commission’s sub-offices in all districts for complaints, if any.
