LARKANA: Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho has expressed his confidence that social activities in the riverine areas of upper Sindh would resume now as peace largely prevails there after massive anti-dacoit operations carried out by security forces over the last few years.

Social activities, including sports, play an important role in promoting peace, brotherhood, harmony and a healthy society, he said while chairing a meeting of senior police officials in the Larkana DIG office on Monday.

“The restoration of law and order in these areas is the fruit of the continuous hard work, professional capabilities and joint strategy of the Sindh police and other law enforcement agencies,” he said, adding that the significant progress towards restoring peace in the riverine areas has been made possible by the full cooperation of the Sindh government and coordination among law-enforcement agencies.

He also attributed the success to the great sacrifices rendered by the police personnel who, he said, laid down their lives in the line of duty. “The achievement is also the result of the sacrifices offered by our martyrs, as well as the courage and bravery demonstrated by our veterans and the tireless efforts put in by other police personnel,” he said. “These sacrifices can never be forgotten,” the IGP said.

Hopes social activities, including sports, will resume as peace prevails

According to him, the highways in Sindh are now safer and more peaceful than before, as acknowledged by the business community across the country. “The provincial government and Sindh police have fulfilled their promise of ensuring restoration of law and order in the riverine areas, and protection of the life and property of locals,” he said.

“We pledge that the peace established in the katcha (riverine) areas will be maintained at all costs, and no one will be allowed to disturb the law and order,” he added.

IGP Odho told the meeting participants that in order to ensure lasting peace in these areas, police infrastructure must be further strengthened, necessary resources provided, and effective coordination among the relevant institutions ensured.

The provincial police chief also commended the Sindh government, federal civil and intelligence agencies, district administrations, Sindh police and Sindh Rangers for the successful and peaceful holding of the three-day ‘Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Sports Festival’ in the Rawanti area of Ghotki district recently.

“I commend the Sukkur DIG, Ghotki SSP and the entire police team for the peaceful, well-organised and excellent holding of the sports festival,” the IGP said.

The meeting also reviewed the overall law and order situation in the riverine areas and the measures being taken by police to maintain peace.

Sukkur DIG Nasir Aftab Khan and Larkana DIG Sheraz Nazir Abbasi gave detailed briefings about the situation in their respective ranges, particularly the riverine areas. They also briefed the IGP about the police operations against criminal elements and the steps taken to establish peace.

The meeting reviewed the position of police posts, infrastructure, vehicles, manpower and available facilities in the riverine areas.

The participants also discussed the resources and requirements needed to further improve the operational capacity of the police.

Besides the Larkana and Sukkur DIGs, the meeting was attended physically by SSPs of Ghotki, Khairpur, Qambar-Shahdadkot, Kandhkot-Kashmore, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana and Shikarpur, as well as the SP of Larkana Special Branch. The DIGs of headquarters and finance, along with the AIGs of finance and administration, joined the meeting via video link.

Earlier, on his arrival in Larkana, IGP Javed Alam Odho was presented a guard of honour by a smartly turned out contingent of police at the DIG office.
