KARACHI: A man was shot dead while trying to save a policeman’s family from robbers near Sohrab Goth late on Thursday night, police and a relative said on Friday.

Police said Rahimullah, 40, a passer-by, was shot dead when three robbers opened fire as they attempted to flee after committing a robbery near Shafiq Mor.

The police registered an FIR against three unidentified suspects on the complaint of Mohammed Danish Iqbal.

In his complaint, Mr Iqbal said he was a constable posted to the investigation wing of the East police and lived in Ahsanabad. He said he had gone with his family to attend a wedding ceremony near Sakhi Hasan Chowrangi. While they were returning, their car broke down near Shafiq Mor. As they pulled over and checked the vehicle, three robbers on a motorcycle arrived and snatched purses and mobile phones from the complainant and his relative.

In the meantime, a man, later identified as Rahimullah, ran towards the robbers who panicked and opened fire on him. They then fled with the looted valuables.

The wounded was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
