LARKANA/KARACHI: The PPP Larkana district chapter organised a Quran Khwani at Bhuttos’ mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto on Friday to observe the 15th death anniversary of Begum Nusrat Bhutto.
PPP leaders, workers and supporters held ceremonies in many cities and towns of the province to mark the occasion with great reverence and respect.
PPP Larkana District General Secretary Aijaz Ahmed Leghari and other participants prayed for the eternal peace, showered rose petals on the graves of Bhuttos and offered Fateha.
Speaking on the occasion, PPP leaders said that Begum Nusrat Bhutto — regarded and titled as the ‘Mother of Democracy’ — kept the party active after her spouse and founder chairman of the PPP Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was executed by the martial law regime. Her active role in the movement against General Ziaul Haq’s dictatorship would be remembered in the pages of history, they said.

Heads of all sister organisations of PPP and their workers also attended the event.
Office-bearers from various tehsils, cities and union councils across the district, including chairmen, vice chairmen, district council members, representatives of all affiliated wings and a large number of dignitaries and party workers, also took part in the ceremony.
PPP Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, paying homage to her in a statement, recalled that she had waged a historic struggle for the restoration of democracy with courage and bravery.
He said Begum Nusrat Bhutto endured violence during the movement but never bowed her head. Mr Khuhro said the Bhutto family and thousands of party workers laid down their lives for the people and democracy in the country. The PPP leadership, he said, accepted lashes, gallows and martyrdom, yet remained among the people and struggled for their right to rule.
He said democracy in the country owed its existence to the sacrifices of the Bhutto family, adding that the struggle of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Begum Nusrat Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for democracy, the Constitution and supremacy of parliament is an unforgettable chapter in history.
He said that despite hardships and difficulties, the PPP leadership never compromised on democratic principles and people’s rights. He said the services and sacrifices of Begum Nusrat Bhutto and other family members for democracy in the country would always be remembered. “We pay rich tribute to the Mother of Democracy, Begum Nusrat Bhutto, on her death anniversary today,” he said.
He added that under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the PPP is playing its role in ensuring continuity of democracy in the country in line with the vision of Z.A. Bhutto, Begum Nusrat Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon paid rich tribute to Begum Nusrat Bhutto on the occasion, and said that her democratic struggle and
sacrifices are an unforgettable chapter in history.
In his statement, he said she waged an unparalleled struggle for democracy, supremacy of the Constitution and public rights, and remained steadfast in her principles while facing all kinds of difficulties.
“Despite the hardships of imprisonment and all other difficulties, she did not step back from her mission to restore democracy. She dedicated her life to democracy, supremacy of the Constitution and the ideology of the Pakistan Peoples Party,” he added.
The PPP Karachi chapter also organised an event to mark the 15th death anniversary of Begum Nusrat Bhutto.
Speaking on the occasion, PPP-Karachi President Saeed Ghani said that the history of the restoration of democracy in Pakistan cannot be written without acknowledging the role played by Begum Nusrat Bhutto, whose struggle against Gen Zia’s martial law was exemplary and commendable.
He said Begum Nusrat Bhutto’s struggle for democracy was so significant that the struggles of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto appeared to be overshadowed by her contribution.
Earlier, Quran Khwani and fateha were also offered for the departed soul.
