GILGIT: The vibrant colours, sweet taste and captivating aroma of indigenous Suspolo apples took centre stage at the 7th National Suspolo Festival 2026, held in Pari Valley of Kharmang district, celebrating the region’s unique agricultural heritage and hardworking farmers.
Organised by the district administration with the support of the Gilgit-Baltistan Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Department, the festival brought together Governor Mehdi Shah, Forests Minister Raja Nasir Ali Khan, locals and domestic and foreign tourists.
Suspolo, a distinctive apple variety grown in Pari, has gained popularity for its juicy sweetness, vibrant colour and powerful fragrance. Locals say its aroma can fill an entire room, while the fruit can be preserved until March.
Speaking to Dawn, Deputy Commissioner Kharmang Nisar Ahmed Khan said the annual festival, held during the harvest season for the past seven years, aims to promote the indigenous apple, showcase local culture and help farmers find better markets for their produce.
Colourful stalls featuring Suspolo apples, homemade delicacies, traditional foods and locally produced goods attracted visitors. Students added to the festive atmosphere with cultural performances, while women and local entrepreneurs found opportunities to showcase their products.
For stallholder Akbar Ali, bringing apples from remote areas remains a challenge, with some villages lacking proper road access.
Growers say improved transport, market access and government incentives could help expand production and open doors to international markets.
