Politics and religion

UNFORTUNATELY, it has become a rather common practice in the country to associate the word ‘Hindu’ with India. While India may well be our historical adversary, and we have every right to criticise its government’s policies, we should not condemn the religion itself. Likewise, even if India considers Pakistan its adversary, Indians should resist the temptation to portray Muslims or their religion in a negative light.

Criticism should always be directed at countries, governments, institutions and their policies — not at religions and their followers. Let us all distinguish between religion and politics. We have every right to criticise a country and its policies, but we must never target a religion. Respect for all faiths is a sign of true tolerance, wisdom and humanity.
