RAWALPINDI: The Punjab Communication and Works Department will begin work on the rehabilitation of nine roads in the garrison city by the end of October, as funds amounting to Rs1.6 billion have been provided by Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC).

The Punjab Highways Department will rehabilitate the roads within the limits of the civic body.

A senior official of the district administration told Dawn that the rehabilitation of Khayaban-i-Sir Syed Road would be completed at a cost of Rs213.466 million; Bokra Road, Rs226.454 million; the upgradation of 5th Road, Rs138.525 million; Rawal Road, from Ali Nawaz Chowk to Murree Road, Rs241.894 million; Chandni Chowk-Commercial Market Road, Rs115.718 million; Railway Workshop Road, Rs247.871 million; China Market-Gordon College Road, Rs138.318 million; Satellite Town 4th B Road, Rs141.007 million; and Band Khana Road, Rs214.417 million.

The official said work would begin after the contract awarding process was completed. He said the divisional administration gave the assignment to the C&W department to rehabilitate the main roads of the garrison city, as Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation had no capacity to carry out the work.

Apart from this, he said three main road projects of the Rawalpindi Development Authority and District Council had also been handed over to the Communication and Works Department.

“Ch Bostan Khan Road from Chaklala Scheme-III to Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench reconstruction project was also given to the C&W, while Chakri Road and the road toward Falcon Chowk along Islamabad Expressway were also handed over to it,” he said.
